Is blogging getting Old?...
And then I realized I am asking the wrong question. The real question to ask is: Do I care? And if I care, why?
People use social media for a lot of reasons. Some of us do it for audience outreach and marketing. Some do it for community building. Many of us do it as a writing exercise, or to share written resources (in my case, folktales and book reviews). Some of these functions can be moved to newer platforms. Some can't (believe me, I tried sharing folktales on Instagram...). And that's okay.
I ask myself the question: Do I care? I like blogging. I enjoy writing posts, and publishing them, and sharing them on my social media. I enjoy reading the posts of other people. I enjoy reading text that is more than 240 characters long. Maybe it means I'm old. But if I actually grow old, and one day I will be sitting in my hover-chair and scrolling through blog posts on my holo-projector... well, I'll be Okay with that.
Maybe by then, blogging will be retro.

Age is but a number. What matters most is content. Also what matters is if you enjoy blogging. If there is no joy in it, it is probably useless. That's why we are encouraged to write about the things that inspire us and make us the most happy.

I love the idea of blogging becoming retro. I guess writing and reading blogs is more akin to reading habits: if you're not used to, or maybe because of sheer need, some prefer very-shorter texts.

ReplyDeleteToday i wrote a poem that current lockdown times and the word 'obdurate'inspired. So my post for the day is O for Obdurate God. A poem for those who don't yield in tough times.
I don't care what anyone else says about blogging, like you because I love it, I love to share myself with my friends. It doesn't matter, although it would be immensely wonderful, that I don't get a plug nickle for doing it. I do it because it makes me happy. Social media isn't what it used to be. By the way, you not old but the younger generation often doesn't know what they like or dislike unless someone tells them. They are too much into following the leader instead of breaking the mold and marching to his/her own drum. A generation and future ones to come with nearly ever aspect of their lives made easier isn't utilizing modern inventions to its fullest like the said 'older person' crowd. I'm gonna beat ya to the hover-chair and holo-projector stage of life but as long as the good Lord gives me presence of mind then I'll probably keeping on doing what I'm doing. O is for Organization
I moved the bulk of my "fashion selfie" posts onto Instagram, which is definitely a better venue. IG is also a good place for visual artists, I have several art series that I "show" daily on the platform. I still blog, and read blogs, and I'm old.

Blogging is a very personal form of expression and is viable as long as a blogger thinks their work is worth putting out to some potential public readership. For most of us it's a free (or inexpensive) form of expression so about all it really takes up is time. For me it's time well spent because blogging keeps me writing, something I might otherwise not do.

I absolutely don't care! I blog for me. All the interaction etc is a bonus. I do like the idea of blogging becoming retro though.
ReplyDeleteWhen I began blogging I didn't consider myself old either. Probably am now. lol I remember the day (in 2008) that I told my eldest I had a Facebook page. Aghast is the best description of her reaction. I laughed aloud.

Call me an old person, but I don't care. I so enjoy blogging and if anything, it's kept my computer skills fresh and I've learned so much.
ReplyDeleteI think blogging is ageless. I am in several blogging groups where the members range from teenagers to retirees and there are many of every age in between. For many its a creative outlet, for others a means to make a living but I think for most its creativity that we aren't getting in our offline life. Retro. Yes that sounds about right. Like my son wanting to where my sweaters or T-shirts from the 70’s and 80’s . Blogging is definitely the best media to write to deadlines, gain readership and feedback, but also to discover new writers and IDEAS and participate in very fruitful discussions. Creativity at its best. I also use Facebook and LinkedIn to gain new followers and insights into writing to constantly improve my craft.
