Twenty questions for JR Vincente (#AtoZChallenge)

#AtoZChallenge 2020 badge

The team decided our theme for this month's posts here would be a take "2020 visions of blogging." This set of weekday posts focuses on:

A 2020 Look at the A to Z Team

Today it is my pleasure to introduce you to one of our shining team members, JR Vincente!
I asked twenty questions, and received some stellar answers :) See for yourself!

1. You have been writing for 15 years, and you publish erotic fiction. Was this the genre you first became interested in writing?

Well, considering I started writing in High School, I definitely did not start with erotic fiction! Actually, I started with mystery. As a teen, it was a great way to channel my frustrations. There were often characters very similar to my classmates… Sometimes I look back at some of those works and chuckle at my naivete.

2. What's your second favorite literary genre, currently?

Mystery, for sure. It has had a place in my heart since my mom handed me a Mary Higgins Clark novel out of my grandmother’s closet shortly after my grandmother’s passing. I fell in love.

3. Your fiction focuses on BDSM lifestyle and relationships. What's the most important thing you'd want an outsider to know about BDSM?

That there isn’t one RIGHT way to do things. As long as everyone is safe, sane, and consensual, figure out what works for both of you or all of you and enjoy it.

4. From what I can tell, there are a lot of harmful stereotypes out there about BDSM, especially from people not involved in it at all. How do you (personally) differentiate between "good" and "bad" (poor quality) BDSM fiction?

I’ll read almost anything. I read a surprisingly small amount of BDSM fiction considering it’s about all I write anymore. I’m mostly looking for something that’s an easy read and entertaining. There are, of course, some egregious issues that I can’t handle. I recently started reading a book where the submissive’s safeword was basically treated as code for “I’m having an orgasm,” and…I don’t think I’m going to be finishing that novel.

5. Are there sub-subgenres (niches?) of BDSM fiction that are close to your heart?

That’s a tough question. There are so many things I like. I have a wide variety of kinks, I’m poly, bisexual, and a switch. So… there isn’t much I don’t like! I do really enjoy reading FemDom stories, which is something I’ve only started exploring in the last few years.

6. "Especially now, an ideal world sounds pretty damn good." - What would your ideal world look like?

Well now, if you have been reading my blog during this challenge, you’ll get a pretty good idea! But, in a nutshell: a world where everyone has equal access, there’s no prejudice, there’s lots of kindness, openness, and empathy.

7. One of the novels you published is a Choose Your Own Adventure book. What was it like, writing a narrative structure like that?

I LOVED IT! One of the things that’s difficult for me as a writer is making all the decisions for every character. Sometimes I worry that the reader will dislike my choices as an author. Writing a Choose Your Own Adventure alleviates all of that. The reader can make whatever choices they want! It’s very freeing, but also very difficult to manage details.

8. What is your favorite part of world building?

I am really enjoying the creative control. No need to worry about STDs or accidental pregnancy in my world!

9. The novel you are blogging about in this year's A to Z is a part of a series. Would you like to tell us more about what you plan for this series?

I started out building the world, then starting my main character’s story. I’ve written two books so far, and her story is nowhere near finished. I’m sure that there are some other characters we’ve met along the way who will have their own story to tell. The sky’s the limit!

10. You state on your blog that you are bi and poly. Are these identities reflected in your writing?

I am! Sometimes they do. I write a lot of bisexual fiction, whether I set out to or not. There are sometimes poly relationships, though often I don’t navigate the world of feelings in the poly relationships. I will probably do more of that as time goes on, but I certainly don’t consider myself an expert!

11. What is the best way you'd like to see these identities reflected in fiction? Or mainstream media? What are the stereotypes you want people to be done with?

I just hate that people have to judge other people’s lifestyles. Why does it matter who I go to sleep with? You aren’t seeing it. I’m not having sex in the streets, for goodness sake. But there are people who do judge, and that’s why I have to keep things somewhat anonymous. It’s frustrating. We are just normal people, living normal lives, we just happen to have other adults who help us out. It’s no different than a best friend who helps out with childcare, except we might have sex, too.

12. How do you think fiction can help with removing stigma from topics such as BDSM or polyamory?

I think a lot of stigma comes from a lack of knowledge. Maybe reading/seeing relationships people haven’t experienced will help them understand that they really aren’t that different, and certainly don’t deserve judgment.

13. If you could ask a big-name/famous/important/awesome writer (in your genre or outside) to mentor you, who would it be?

I would love to talk to Laurell K. Hamilton. In what I’ve seen of her social media, she seems like an awesome person, and I LOVE her work. I actually won’t read her novels unless I know I can devote some serious time to it because I can’t put it down!

14. What is your daily (weekly?) writing routine like?

I try to write daily. The challenge I set for myself of writing 1,000,000 words in 2020 requires about 2800 words per day. When I skip days, those words stack up quickly! My best writing times are early in the morning or when I’m out of the house. If I know I can’t set aside some time after work, I try to get up early and write. When all else fails, I make a date with my best writing friend to write together early on a weekend morning.

15. If one of your novels (current or future) would be turned into a movie, what would your dreams be for that movie?

I would love for something to go as mainstream as 50 Shades did. I know that’s not a great representation of BDSM (okay, maybe it’s a pretty terrible representation), but what was impressive to me was that many people outside the community saw it. I think that’s pretty cool. Plus, I could probably write full time off the money that made!

16. If you could write script for a TV show of your choice (existing or original), what would it be?

Gilmore Girls. It was always such a great show, very witty. Loved it.

17. Next to writing fiction, you also blog regularly. Does writing a blog post require a different mindset? Do you easily switch between the two?

It’s definitely very different. I write a lot more easily than I blog. I actually started my blog because of the A to Z Challenge. That makes it easier – having a focus and a goal. Otherwise, I get listless. What do people want to read about? I’m not comfortable talking about my kids on my otherwise kinky bdsm blog! So… what else is there?

18. What advice would you give to bloggers about blogging adult content?

Be honest. It’s so rare to find raw honestly in the world anymore. If you’re going to blog about adult content, don’t censor yourself.

19. What is your favorite part of the A to Z Challenge?

The people! I love reading new blogs, getting comments, responding to comments. It’s such an awesome community!

20. What is something you would have never learned if it wasn't for A to Z?

A to Z wasn’t just the inspiration to start my blog. It was also the inspiration to write my Choose Your Own Adventure. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it!

Thanks Team! ( #AtoZChallenge )

The A to Z Team wants to thank all participants and supporters of the Challenge.  Without you A to Z would not be what it is.  On a personal level I want to give a hearty thank you to our great A to Z Team who keep the Challenge running smoothly.

#AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary blogging from A to Z challenge letter

We're celebrating our Tenth Anniversary here at the April Blogging from A to Z Challenge.

#AtoZchallenge. The blog hop that made an online community by asking bloggers to spend the month of April using the English alphabet as inspiration for their posts. We're glad you stopped by today.

                                         ***********************

If you're looking for someone to thank for this year's Challenge then don't be heaping any praise on me.   Maybe I seem to have been a bit withdrawn from the A to Z this time around and to a great extent I have.  If it weren't for the A to Z team this year this Challenge might not have gotten off the ground with the success we have seen thus far.

Over the past couple of years we have downsized the A to Z Team from what it had been in the past and it's worked pretty well in my opinion.  We've had some outstanding A to Z Team members in the past and this year we've had one of the tightest most efficient teams yet. They're all Challenge veterans who've gotten the routine down to a science.

So my most expansive thank you to our team captain J Lenni Dorner who with great competency took the reins of this 10th annual Challenge as I've dealt with some distracting personal matters.  J, you're the best and hope you'll stick with us in the coming years.  Also, my thanks to Jayden R Vincente who has done a fantastic job setting up the sign-up lists and maintaining them.   Another big thank you goes to John Holton who has provided technical assistance to make things run better as well as his continual efforts to promote A to Z.  And finally there is Zalka Csenge Virág who has been a key A to Z Team member since 2015 and provided valuable promotional support for the Challenge.

I hope everyone who reads this post will take the time to visit the blogs of each of these members to say thank you.  I'm sure they'd appreciate that.

        Thank you Team 2019!

                                           **********************

Runaway

Author Name: JR Vincente
Age category: Erotica
Genre: "Choose Your Adventure"/ Erotica

Brief description:
Join Aralyn as she runs from her past in this Erotic Choose Your Own Adventure novel. Aralyn leaves town when her life is turned upside down. Your blood will race as you explore a new town and new people with Aralyn. She might even get to explore a BDSM Dungeon! Make your own choices and find out.
Runaway a #MustRead on the #AtoZChallenge Book Reviews, Tour, and Blog Hop!

Why did you take part in the A to Z Challenge the year that your book was "given life"?

A friend of mine recommended the challenge and I thought it would be fun! I loved the idea of the readers participating.
Yeah. We have that same friend. I brought her in, she brought you in. This is a real community.

Why did you start blogging?

Because of the A to Z Blog Challenge. Someone recommended it to me and I needed a blog to participate!
Same mischievous friend again, I presume.

Do you have any other books coming out soon?

Soon! I have written another book stemming from that A to Z Challenge I'm in the process of editing.

What other books do you have available?

I have two erotic novels that are not Choose Your Own Adventures. My debut novel is called Slave and my newest release is Y is for Yes.

#WriteTip

Take constructive criticism. Ask someone else to read what you write and listen to what they have to say.

Where did the idea for this book come from, other than the alphabet and the challenge?

As a writer, I was often gripped with indecision as to what decisions to make. This put the power in the reader's hands!

What writing goal do you hope to accomplish this year?

I hope to publish B is for Blackmail and write its sequel.

EXCLUSIVE TOUR CONTENT: Scene/ Excerpt

“Chilly,” she said with a shiver.

“I know,” he said with a smile. “We wouldn’t want the ice to melt too quickly, now would we?” She raised an eyebrow at him, but she wasn’t entirely sure she understood what he meant. “Can we play?”

“With the ice?” she asked.

“Yes,” he said.

“Okay,” she said, a little too eagerly.

As a reader, what most motivates you to buy a new book to read?

A catchy title or synopsis.

Tell us, A to Z blog readers, what did you think of this tour? Should we do it again next year?

Does your blog support diverse books?
The diverse book movement recognizes all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities. https://diversebooks.org
Yes!

Are you willing to include debut authors?

Yes! Though this blog doesn't do many book posts.

And yet you volunteered to help out during this event?

Yeah. I know two of the authors in it. You and JR. So it wasn't like I was going to say no and miss the fun.

Why do you take part in the A to Z Challenge?

I take part in the A to Z Challenge because it gives my blog some focus, it's a fun event to take part in, and... oh right, I'm friends with two of the team members.

Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because I wanted an online outlet that wasn't just social media. A place that was more for me.

What goal do you or your blog hope to accomplish this year?

Two of my fellow writers and I started writing a book together. I hope we can finish it this year because it's such a fun project.

As a reader, what most motivates you to buy a new book to read?

A great cover gets me to pick it up, and reading the back and first few pages help me decide if I'll buy it. A sale price or a suggestion from a friend are also big influences.

Why did you take part in the A to Z Challenge the year that your book was "given life"?

As I said in my 2015 theme reveal, I wanted to inspire and teach others. I also hoped to make new friends. It was also the first year I volunteered to help the A to Z Team (joining under Arlee's Ambassadors).

Why did you start blogging?

This is answered in my very first blog post. "You may wonder why I started a blog. I may wonder that too! Actually, this blog was started because I heard about the A to Z challenge from some nanowrimo friends."

Do you have any other books coming out soon?

Yes!
"WRITING BOOK REVIEWS AS AN AUTHOR:
INSPIRATION TO MAKE IT EASIER"
is up for pre-sale.

What other books do you have available?

Fractions of Existence, an Urban Fantasy.

Is the Setting a Character in your writing? #writetip from @JLenniDorner Read more here: http://writeeditpublishnow.blogspot.com/2015/11/wepff-winner-j-lenni-dorner-talks.html

Where did the idea for this book come from, other than the alphabet and the challenge?

The idea came from some post by literary agents during a MSWL chat. They were looking for books where the setting was a character. I knew how to do that, so I turned it into a month of blog posts. Then I figured I'd also make it into a book.

What writing goal do you hope to accomplish this year?

My biggest writing goal this year is to publish two books in 2019.

Why did you take part in the A to Z Challenge the year that your book was "given life"?

I love writing challenges, and the A to Z challenge is no exception! It was fun to have my readers pick their favorite short stories, and the favorite of all was turned into a novel.

Why did you start blogging?

Do you have any other books coming out soon?

Soon! I have written another book stemming from that A to Z Challenge I'm in the process of editing.

What other books do you have available?

I have a Choose Your Own Erotic Adventure and another novel like this one. See my website for synopses and details! https://jrvincente.wordpress.com/

I have always had these incomplete swirling in my head and I wanted to give them life, even if I couldn't (or wouldn't) dedicate a whole novel to them.

What writing goal do you hope to accomplish this year?

I hope to publish B is for Blackmail and write its sequel.

As a reader, what most motivates you to buy a new book to read?

Why did you take part in the A to Z Challenge the year that your book was "given life"?
It's the ten year anniversary. I'm very excited to be a co-host of the A to Z Challenge. This is an incredible community.

Why did you start blogging?
This is answered in my very first blog post. "You may wonder why I started a blog. I may wonder that too! Actually, this blog was started because I heard about the A to Z challenge from some NaNoWriMo friends."

Do you have any other books coming out soon?
This is my current new publication.
"WRITING BOOK REVIEWS AS AN AUTHOR:
INSPIRATION TO MAKE IT EASIER"

I have several stories in the works though.

What other books do you have available?
"Fractions of Existence"
Amazon An urban fantasy. Free on Kindle Unlimited.

Preparing to Write Settings that Feel Like Characters - Amazon and Smashwords

Brief tip on writing:
Here's a motivational quote of mine about when you feel like giving up on writing.
#WriteTip motivation to not quit writing by @JLenniDorner

Where did the idea for this book come from, other than the alphabet and the challenge?
The idea came from interviewing so many debut authors at Operation Awesome. I noticed that some authors reviewed a lot of books, and others had never written one. I set out to inspire those who didn't write reviews. It turned out to be long enough for a month of blog posts (this coming April). Then I noticed I had enough to make a reference book.

What writing goal do you hope to accomplish this year?
My biggest writing goal this year is to publish two books in 2019.

A is for Amazing Alphabet Team #AtoZchallenge

#AtoZchallenge 2018 A is for Amazing Alphabet Team

For our team A post, we present a brief interview with the 2018 Amazing Alphabet Team!

(The fine folks who volunteer their time, energy, and skills to make this challenge happen for you. There will be a seperate post to honor our Amazing graphics guy, Jeremey, later this month.)

1- What's your passion in life?

Arlee-  One passion that consumes much of my thinking is road tripping.  I hate to think of a time when I wouldn't be able to drive.

J- Writing is my passion. That's how I relate to the world.

Csenge- Storytelling. It is both my passion and my profession, which makes me incredibly lucky.

John- Music. Roughly half of my posts outside the A to Z Challenge are about music, and a couple of years ago I had two themes (quite by accident) and one of them was music.

Jayden-Writing, of course. It's therapeutic. But music is a close second. Singing is like sharing a story through song and I love that.

2- What are your goals during the A to Z Challenge 2018?

Arlee-  To keep a balance in my life between blogging and other stuff around me.  But I do want to get my posts done before April.

J- My goals are to make this year really fun for all participants, to complete the challenge, and to leave comments on 300 blogs. On my own blog, I have a short story told in parts, which my goal is to get people to think about life. (If you do too, check out the stories of A to Z post!)

Csenge- My goal is to write posts that people find both entertaining and informative. Also, to make some new blogging friends! I have found marvelous blogs through the challenge in the past, I am looking forward to more.

John- To have all the posts done by April 1 and do as much visiting of other blogs as I can during April.

Jayden- My goal for this year is to have all of my posts ready to go before April 1st so I can enjoy exploring new blogs! I have found some awesome writers I am excited to catch up with this year and I look forward to finding even more!

3- What was your biggest accomplishment in the last 12 months?

Arlee-  It's become a yearly tradition--driving back east to see family, friends, and especially my grandkids including the newest girl child, Logan Lego.  This past year I made the trip twice.

J- Publishing my debut novel, Fractions of Existence, was my biggest accomplishement in the last 12 months. One of the coolest parts was being interviewed on the Debut Author Spotlight at Operation Awesome. (That's what I usually do on Wednesdays, so it was fun to switch to the hotseat.)

Csenge- Finishing my PhD, and publishing Dancing on Blades, my new folktale collection!

John- Continuing my streak of consecutive days posting to the blog, now close to 1500.

Jayden-Publishing my first Choose Your Own Adventure Erotic Novel: Runaway. I couldn't believe how much fun I had writing it for NaNoWriMo last year. I released one iteration of the novel in last year's A to Z Blog Challenge. Publishing the whole novel April 30th was incredible!

4- What about a blog will catch your eye and turn you into a regular visitor?

Arlee-  Interesting material written in an accessible style--and preferably in black print on a white background.

J- A blog with a subject I enjoy written in captivating manner will always keep me coming back for more.

Csenge- I like blogs with interesting topics or themes. Bonus if they are related to folklore, mythology, or role-playing games.

John- Humor. I like to laugh.

Jayden-I love a well written story. I enjoy characters whose lives are compelling, particularly if it's an ongoing story!

5- Besides your blog, how can you be reached online?

Arlee-  I'm not on social media very much, but I can be found on Twitter @ArleeBird

J- Twitter twitter.com/JLenniDorner is my favorite method of online communication. I'm also on facebook.com/WhatAreThey and most of the other major social media outlets.

Csenge- Twitter (https://twitter.com/TarkabarkaHolgy), and the Facebook page for my "Following folktales around the world" series.

John- I have presences on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/johltonehandtyping), Twitter (https://twitter.com/onehandtyping), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/onehandtyping/), and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/onehandtyping_/). Probably the best way would be through Instagram, as I don't check the others that frequently.
